A network cabling engineer plans, designs and constructs cable systems to allow for communication between devices, access to internet resources and access to telecommunication networks. The engineer is required to analyse, monitor and maintain the network in such a way that all of the stakeholders get maximum reliable access.

Much of the work involves doing feasibility studies, calculating budgets and doing detailed estimates. This will access the viability of planned solutions in terms of financial and engineering requirements.

A cabling engineer should posses good troubleshooting skills to the extent that they are able to pinpoint the area where the networking has malfunctioned. In many instances, this initial analysis may have to be made on customer statements. Due to the fact that some systems are dispersed across a wide area, an accurate first time analysis could save a lot of travelling.
